What "standard alteration" actually covers

Standard alterations are the everyday adjustments most wardrobes need at some point: hemming, taking in, letting out, replacing a zipper or button, reattaching a fallen lining, fixing a torn pocket bag, repairing a split seam. They're distinct from custom clothing (building a garment from scratch) and from specialty work like bridal, leather, fur and suede, or heavy reconstruction. Sometimes the honest answer is "this garment isn't worth altering." A poorly constructed dress with fused rather than sewn seams will not survive most alterations. A jacket with shoulders set wrong from the factory can be made to look better but not made to look right. Fast-fashion garments often cost less than the alteration itself; the math does not work.
